Steve Seiler is a public member on the Investigative Committee. He's a former health executive responsible for managing hospital and health systems across the country.
Seiler had an interview for the public member position during the July 17, 2019 board meeting. It was likely one of the more informative interviews they'd had, lasting for over ten minutes. Board member Creager lauded Seiler's prior employer, "Good Sam," now better known as the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix. When asked about his interest serving on the Board, he said that his entire career had been in health care and he believes in providing the best service to patients possible. He noted that health care is complex and believed that his background in health care would help him in the similar environment of the veterinary board. While he conceded that he wasn't entirely sure, it was his understanding that the Board was responsible to "investigate and adjudicate" problems between veterinarians and other parties, particularly family members.
He specifically noted that he has known veterinary board member and investigator Robert Kritsberg "for a long time" and that it was Kritsberg who had told him about the public opening and "urged me to make [an] application." He conceded that aside from "that basic understanding" he was "not sure that I have a full comprehension of exactly what the board does." He says that he is a pet lover and has the same strong feelings about good care for pets that he did for humans. Creager replied that she had "zero" background in health care but worked her way up from the Investigative Committee to the Board itself.
Seiler said that while he was now retired, for the past fourteen years he's been part of a group of hospital CEOs he put together around the country; he felt it was important for a small group of people to get together and learn things noncompetetively to discuss long-term implications in health care, which is keeping him informed about health care and how dramatically it's changing. He described health care as being "in transformational change at light speed." He also mentioned other nonprofit work and likes to help put people in contact with other people needing assistance with various programs. Public member Jane Soloman said that his executive experience "would be a real asset" to the Committee, and he also elaborated in a further question that his primary accomplishments relate to making patient care better and leading by example.
The Board discussion was brief. They stated that the position had been open for six weeks and he was the only applicant, then went ahead and appointed him to the Investigative Committee alongside his friend Robert Kritsberg. Seiler was subsequently reappointed in the June 16, 2021 board meeting.
The Beta Phi chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Arizona also has a posted bio for Seiler as part of his 2011 induction into the Beta Phi Hall of Honor (link). It largely tracks with the bio presented to the Board, listing a wide number of executive-level positions in healthcare and hospital management. It also mentions he currently runs something called the Windpines Group and also acts as facilitator for the Health Executives Forum, a group of health executives. It also lists a variety of nonprofit and volunteer experience in subjects largely related to healthcare or business.
